Virtual Space App Camp 2021

For the 10th time, the European Space Agency (ESA) invited up to 25 developers to participate in its prestigious Space App Camp. It was the first time that the ESA Space App Camp has offered an Enhanced Mentorship programme to its participants: a comprehensive preparation and mentorship phase over an 8-week period including the final week of the Space App Camp, which was reserved for fine-tuning, finalising prototypes, and presenting the application.

What was in it for participants?

  • Bringing their app/idea/concept to real life.
  • Benefitting from dedicated technical, business, and legal coaching from ESA and international experts.
  • Meeting one-on-one the prominent guests (Astronauts, Business Leaders, and Space Programmes Managers).
  • Joining an elite group of like-minded people from all over the world and being part of a community of innovators willing to provide solutions with Earth Observation to overcome societal challenges.
  • Competing for the Awards!

Interested students, researchers and developers applied from 17 June until 14 July 2021.

This year, the virtual event took place from 20 July – 20 September 2021.

the ESA Φ-lab

This year’s edition counted with the special support of the ESA Φ-lab. Over the course of this eight-week programme, participants were supported by dedicated Content Mentors from the ESA Φ-lab.

They are excellent Research Fellows qualified in a wide range of disciplines such as Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, satellite image processing, remote sensing, Space Systems and much more!

The Φ-lab concept was born in spring 2017 when some of ESA’s executives travelled to Silicon Valley in the United States, where they saw examples of organisations fostering innovation in inspiring environments.

In this short period until today, the ESA Φ-lab has become the reference in the Earth Observation sector by making a significant transformation in innovation and business investment.

Through this collaboration, Space App Camp participants will be able to receive adapted and dedicated support in all the thematic areas to further develop their app ideas!

Details

Huge amounts of data from space, available through the European Earth observation programme – Copernicus, and its fleet of Sentinel satellites, offer countless opportunities when it comes to mobile applications. The ESA Space App Camp enables development of creative and innovative apps that make Earth observation data – particularly from Copernicus – accessible to a wide range of citizens through their smart phones or personal devices.

This unique event was initiated by ESA in 2012 and has since been organised by AZO Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen and RAMANI. The 2021 virtual edition will feature an enhanced cooperation with the ESA Ф-Lab.

ESA Space App Camp participants learned, how Earth Observation applications development could be combined with Mobile App design and development skills.

They benefitted from an eight week-long mentoring programme that helped them to deliver results with a high level of readiness, e.g., mature prototypes of mobile applications.

During the ESA Space App Camp, attendees were also able to network with like-minded participants from all over the world and gained insights into the European Space Agency programmes and initiatives that target the commercialisation of the space sector, start-up community and aspiring business leaders.

Finally, they will have the opportunity to win precious awards and present the results of their work via a dedicated Award Ceremony as well as at the most prominent ESA EO event called PhiWeek to be held in October 2021.
