WHAT IT´S ALL ABOUT

Increasing numbers of mobile phone users are bringing wealth of business opportunities to develop Mobile Apps. At the same time, a huge amount of data from space can be exploited to develop new types of mobile applications while exploring the advances in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Edge, and/or Distributed Computing.
The European Space Agency (ESA) invites software developers, AI, and ML specialists, EO applications specialists and business development experts to attend its free online Space App Camp. The ESA Space App Camp offers a virtual enhanced mentoring programme for up to 25 dedicated participants to bridge the Earth Observation data and applications with the commercialisation strategies leveraging Mobile Apps technology.

This year’s Space App Camp consists of an eight week-long mentoring and preparation phase, supported by dedicated experts. Interested students, researchers and developers can register here from 17 June until 8 July 2021. This year, the virtual event will take place from 20 July – 20 September 2021.

What can be won?

  • Win up to EUR 2,500 (equally distributed amongst the winning team)
  • An opportunity to participate in the week-long ESA’s Living Planet Symposium, currently planned between 23 May and 27 May 2022 in Bonn, Germany (all participation fees, travel and accommodation costs are covered by ESA).
  • A unique Earth observation support package worth approx. EUR 3,500 (including: technical EO data consultancy, 8 hours of software engineering services, access to a global network of EO experts in applied and technical fields, support from professional ESA business developers, e.g., to find launching customers, 4 places on an online EO business development course)

The aim of ESA’s Space App Camp is to raise awareness of the possibilities offered by Europe’s Copernicus programme when it comes to enriching mobile apps and upscaling the usage of Copernicus data on smartphones. In doing so, it focuses on leveraging the possibilities offered by the European Earth observation programme Copernicus, which became operational with the launch of the first Sentinel Satellite in April 2014. The latest member of ESA’s Earth observation satellites, Sentinel-6 carries a radar altimeter to measure global sea-surface height, primarily for operational oceanography and for climate studies. The first satellite was launched into orbit on 21 November 2020 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, US.

The concept for the 2021 virtual edition involves close cooperation with the ESA Ф-lab with a clear focus on delivering results with a high level of readiness, e.g., more mature prototypes of mobile applications.

The detailed Terms and Conditions for the participation are available here.

The Space App Camp is organised by AZO Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA) and with the support of RAMANI B.V.

Categories

During the Space App Camp, participants will aim to use Earth observation data to develop and implement innovative ideas and viable business cases for apps that address one of the following challenges:

  • Marine Litter and Coastal Zones Management, e.g. detect Marine debris from Sentinel-2
  • Early Warning Fire detection using the Sentinels, e.g. Sentinel-2 (as precursor for Phisat-2)
  • Artificial Intelligence for EO data, e.g. semantic labelling and classification, optical super-resolution
  • Smart Cities in 3D; VR rendering of cities based on EO images and Artificial Intelligence
  • Health & Tropical Disease Risk Forecasting; towards predicting vector-born deseases using EO
  • Education applications for EO and AI
  • Gamification, e.g. from cloud patterns in precursor Sentinel-4 imagery guess the convective events
  • Any other category of your choice to be validated by ESA

During the application process, applicants will be required to indicate in which category they would like to apply and provide some justification.

Programme

The 2021 Space App Camp will offer to the participants a coaching formula through the Enhanced Mentorship Programme.

The cornerstones of the Enhanced Mentorship Programme are three-fold:

  • The assessment of the teams’ needs in terms of knowledge and skills.
  • A matchmaking with the Content Mentors provided by RAMANI and the ESA Ф-lab.
  • A dedicated and customised training based on situated learning.

The main task of the mentors will be to bridge any gaps in the participants’ ability to deliver and define their Mobile Apps technical ideas (embedded systems and architecture) as well as business environment (market definition, financial and business engineering, commercialisation and IP-protection aspects). Situated learning places the learners “within the experience” and encourages them to learn through dialogue with others within the team. It involves co-participation and co-development of business concepts and technical prototypes leveraging effective teamwork and social engagement process.

It is the first time that the ESA Space App Camp has offered an enhanced mentorship programme to its participants: a comprehensive learning and mobile software development scheme spread throughout an eight-week long period and supported by experts in Earth observation (EO), artificial intelligence, intellectual property protection and business development.

WHO CAN TAKE PART?

Individuals who are a national of an ESA Member State, including Canada (as a Cooperating State), Slovenia, Latvia, and Lithuania (as Associate Member States), of a Member State of the European Union, or of a State associated with the Horizon Europe Programme of the European Union are invited to apply.

To apply to the Space App Camp, eligible candidates must fill in an online application form. As part of their application, Applicants will be invited, among others, to submit links or reference to Apps which they previously developed and/or published, or to other information supporting their claimed experience. Candidates can apply alone or in teams of two to four. Following their selection, Participants not already part of a team will be grouped into teams.
